An Open Letter to Austin Beutner
Are we ready for COVID19?
Dear Mr. Beutner:
The journalists for the Bell Chimes are sending you this open letter in the hopes of you answering a few questions.
First, thank you for the recent phone call to the people within LAUSD notifying everyone there are no cases of COVID19 so far in the district.
However, do you or LAUSD have a plan ready in the case of a possible COVID19 outbreak in any of the schools within the district? Why have you not mentioned any specifics?
Second, what is your opinion on China being able to move 181 million students to online learning after their schools shut down?
Do you believe LAUSD can do the same? Why or why not?
We sincerely thank you for taking your time to answer our questions.
The Bell Chimes

I think it’s time to update this letter! Schools across the U.S. are being shut down and asked to hold classes online, even when there have only been a couple of confirmed coronavirus cases in the county. According to this ( http://www.publichealth.lacounty.gov/media/Coronavirus/ ) tracker, there have been 32 confirmed cases of coronavirus in LA county. That begs the question: why can’t LAUSD shut down its campuses? Could it have something to do with how much money they are paid by government agencies to keep kids attending class? Should we, as a community, be making phone calls to Beutner? Great work with the website, by the way!
