Horror movies are very near and dear to me, so naturally I’ve watched a lot of these types of films. Here are my favorite five horror movies.
5. Black Christmas (1974)
- Black Christmas is the grandfather of the modern slasher film. It follows sorority sisters during their winter break and they start getting strange, lewd phone calls. Random girls start ending up dead, they suspect a killer is on the loose, little do they know the killer is much closer than they think.
4. The Evil Dead (1981)

- The Evil Dead was the debut for Sam Raimi, a very accomplished director. The movie follows 5 teens as they stay at an isolated cabin in the woods. They uncover the Necronomicon Ex Mortis, book of the dead, which unleashes evil demons which possess the teens and turn them into “deadites.” The protagonist, Ashley J. Williams fights against these monsters to save himself from being turned into a deadite as well.
3. Sleepaway Camp (1983)
- Sleepaway Camp is a cult classic horror film with a campy flair to it. This movie centers around a summer camp for teens, which Angela Baker attends. During her stay at the camp, some of the attendees get picked off one by one by a mysterious killer. The conclusion of the film is one of the infamous endings in horror movie history and is very close to my heart.
2. Candyman (1992)
- Candyman has one of the best stories for a horror movie. A deeply touching story about generations of trauma caused by racism and slavery along with gentrification wrapped in a horror film. It tells the tale of a grad student writing her thesis on urban legends which gets her acquainted with the Candyman, a spirit who is summoned when you call his name 5 times. Upon further investigation she gets wrapped up in a series of murders while she descends further into madness.
1. Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974)
- Out of the five movies here, Texas Chainsaw Massacre is the most influential. This film is about a group of teens driving through rural Texas. They come across a hitchhiker and things begin to take a change for the worse. This film features one of the most iconic scream queens ever, Sally Hardesty. Not to mention this movie has Leatherface, my favorite slasher ever. This is THE horror film and I highly recommend it.
